Beyond water resistance: the adhesion properties of WRBs and liquid flashing.

Having perspective on how WRBs resist water, I am now turning my attention to adhesion properties of WRBs and liquid flashing. Many liquid-applied or pre-coated systems absorb water. Their adhesion properties are also affected by water. And forget about aluminum substrates per AAMA 711/714. I’m talking about real substrates – wood, gypsum, concrete, and magnesium oxide. 

I’m using various methods, including face columns, ponding tests, saturated interfaces, and inverted immersion tests – as shown here. Where fastener treatment is not required, this too is considered. 

Some fascinating insights have emerged and I’m sure there are many more to come.
