At IIBEC 2025 in St. Louis, M. Steven Doggett, Ph.D. and Jarrett Davis discussed ASTM E2273, Standard Test Method for Determining the Drainage Efficiency of Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS).
In their research on the drainage efficiency of fiber cement panels, Steve and Jarrett challenged industry assumptions on the relationships between drainage gap size, drainage efficiency, water absorption, and water application rates.
They discussed ASTM E2273—its methods, criteria, and limitations—as well as key factors that influence drainage efficiencies in real-world conditions and standardized testing, the results of hygrothermal simulations on multiple North American climates, and the need for optimized gap size based on climate and proposed wall type.
